Bhopal Lakes: Lifeline to the city

Bhopal is known as a city of lakes. The lakes not only provide the residents with drinking water but also remain a main attraction for leisure activities for tourists and Bhopalis. At the same time, the lakes provide livelihood opportunities to communities of boatmen, fishermen as well as those who harvest water chestnuts. It is said that Raja Bhoj, after whom the city gets its name, had created the lake almost 1,000 years back for the sustenance of his subjects but the lake also proved to be good for the trade and defence of his kingdom. Even all these centuries, the lake maintains the ecological balance of the city.
