Madhya Pradesh begins preparations to reintroduce cheetah
The Madhya Pradesh Forest Department is making preparations to re-introduce the cheetah at the Nauradehi wildlife sanctuary, almost 75 years after the animal went extinct in India. As a first step, the department has begun shifting the residents of half a dozen villages close to the sanctuary that is located on the borders of Sagar, Jabalpur and Damoh.
Under the plan, which is being implemented as a joint effort by the Centre and the state, India will translocate about 20 cheetas in a 300 km area. Cheetas are still found in Africa and Middle Eastern countries.
